The ocean floor is a vast and mysterious place rarely seen by human eyes. Until recently, we have disposed of wastes in the ocean with little or no understanding of the local processes shaping the sea floor. Marine scientists are now able to characterize the ocean bottom over wide areas. They are building an information base that describes bottom currents and submarine geology which will be vital for informed decisions on our use of the ocean floor.
