And Reclamation means non-polluting electric power from great hydro plants - power that comes on quickly, water falling through turbines, spinning generators, firming up energy supply from other sources at times when energy is most needed. Transmission lines link Reclamation hydro plants in a great network, providing power to cities and industry as well as farms.

Reclamation also brings dividends not foreseen by Major Powell or Teddy Roosevelt - water-based recreation. Hundreds of man-made lakes throughout the West provide water skiing, boating, fishing, and camping.

And the lakes are homes for wildlife. Water resource management to preserve and extend fish and wildlife habitat.

Engineers and ecologists work together to preserve spawning areas, adding gravel to great canals, simulating natural streams where salmon breed.
