First Segment: In response to the question whether contemporary literature has drifted away from storytelling, Welty observes that narrative can never truly be lost, because it is inherent to love a story, no matter how distant something may be based on it. Welty feels that narrative is "the sort of spine of like what happens next and why did this happen, and so on, and all the questions that go with it which are human in character; what made people do so and so, what happened to people as a result of so and so. To try to put it in general terms, I suppose that there will always be variations, there always are. What's true this year may not be true next year." |
